Ever feel like you are going through the motions at work and get disconnected from the people you work with? Try a few simple suggestions from our HR Guru, Lisa.
Simple things that go a long way
Say thank you – It’s free and carries a lot of weight
Listen – take time to listen to your employees. Don’t just “hear” them, but really listen
Ask them how they are doing – and care about their response
Learn your employee’s kids names and ask them how they are doing. Employees like to feel like someone at work cares about them and their family.
Take them to lunch and get to know them – It’s amazing what Sushi can do to help build relationships… remember that employees leave managers, not companies
Ok, enough with all the soft stuff…. Lets (cut the crap) I mean…get down to business
Set expectations – most employees want to do a good job. Tell them exactly what you want… and wow… you might just get the results you were expecting
Hold them accountable – Believe it or not this is the key to success, not only for your business but for your employees as well. Your top performers will appreciate the positive recognition when you notice the job has been done to perfection. Your poor performers will be identified and pushed out of the organization a lot faster! This will make your “A” players happy
Be honest – Employees want to work with a boss they can trust
Have those “tough conversations” sooner than later. All waiting does is prolong the inevitable. That way you don’t lose sleep and the employee can know where they stand asap. Employees don’t know what you don’t tell them…. So tell them!
Have fun! – don’t be afraid to let your employees know who you are and that you put your pants on the same way they do. Create a fun Friday where you get to interact with your employees. Throw darts (not at each other), play Pictionary, finger paint (not each other)… but you get what I am saying
