Setting Successful Business Goals for the New Year

It’s no secret that January is goal setting month – in fact, you may have already set goals for yourself. While hitting the gym and saving for a big vacation may be excellent personal goals for 2016, have you thought about what goals you’re setting for your company?
Goal setting in January will set your company up for success for the rest of the year. Here are 5 tips you can use to make sure you’re setting yourself up for a successful and prosperous 2016.
1 - Reflect and Plan
Did your company meet all of its goals for 2016? If not, which ones were not accomplished? Look deeper into the reasons why items were not accomplished and find new ways to overcome those obstacles. If you achieved your goals, determine what worked for your company and keep doing these activities.
Using 2015 as a baseline for activity evaluation will allow you to plan appropriately for the next 12 months. If budget spending was out of control, find new means to reduce costs and increase your company’s bottom line. If your company experienced substantial growth, think of new ways to invest your profits in both your business and your team.
2 – Employee Retention and Growth
Your employees are your most important assets, making it important to invest in their success. In today’s changing employment landscape, employees will leave companies for better benefit packages or higher wages. Investing in your employees and providing stellar benefits, growth opportunities, and a collaborative culture will prevent them from leaving. 4 – Stay Organized, Be Prepared
A plan with the best intentions can go awry without much warning. You cannot prepare for every circumstance throughout the next year, but you can take precautions to make sure you and your company are prepared for the worst-case scenario. A safety inspection, for example, can help prevent any obvious slip, trip, or fall hazards at your company. Reviewing progress on goals at quarterly or monthly basis will allow you to adjust and modify goals or other items you’re tracking.
5 – Make Sure Goals are Clear and Attainable
There’s been a lot of talk in this article about goals, but which goals you choose to pursue are up to you! The most important thing to be mindful of: make sure they’re clear and attainable. Put measurable and/or traceable mechanisms in place, such as revenue targets or number of customer leads. Goals that aren’t easy to measure or track are usually not specific enough.
